Fire Prevention

Q: What is Fire Prevention and why is it necessary with alternative solvents?
A: Drying processes in alternative solvents require something unheard of in perc drycleaning machines: Fire Prevention. It's needed because all alternative solvents, except CO2, have flash points, meaning they can become flammable during drying.

Q: What are the flash points of the common alternative solvents available today?
A: Silicon 170F, DF-2000 147F, EcoSolv 140F, and Stoddard 100-139F.

Q: So what's exactly is the problem?
A: The major dilemma to alternative solvents is the drycleaning machine cannot create too high of a temperature during drying because the concern of fire. But lowering the temperature means increasing the drying time, and your cycle times.

Q: What solutions are there?
A: While there are many tried solutions, only one, SATEC USA's Dry Control System, can effectively lower dry times while remaining 100% safe.

Tried but ineffective drying systems include:
1. Temperature Control - This is the most dangerous system of all. This system relies on the amount of solvent coming from the refrigeration coil. The level of solvent, which becomes liquid from the vapor state after being condensed, is so small, that it is practically impossible to know the exact temperature inside the drum. By the time this system detects the danger level, a fire may have already occurred inside the drum.

2. Vacuum system - This drying system tries to eliminate one of the key ingredients to starting a fire: Oxygen. However, there are two "catches". The very vacuum that eliminates oxygen, also eliminates the heat transferring medium: air. Without any air, you are left with slow ineffective drying because no heat can be conducted through a vacuum. The other problem is the noise levels of the vacuum motor. It can easily exceeed local noise control levels.

3. Nitrogen Injection - A nitrogen blanket injection system works well...when it works. By displacing Oxygen with Nitrogen in the drum, you remove one requirement of fire. However, this method has been abandoned by manufacturers because of the unreliability of the nitrogen generators.

4. Nitrogen Stand By - This is a fire extinguishing system that does nothing to prevent fire. It only tries to limit the damage.

Vapor Detection System -AnyLogic Dry Control System - This is the only system that offers 100% fire prevention. The Dry Control System Control is based on the fact that hydrocarbon only becomes flammable when the vapor level reaches 6,000 PPM during drying. The two companies are joining to form a new company, FUT-Satec USA GmbH. The new company, located in Herten, Germany, will manufacture many industrial products including commercial drycleaning machines. Fresenius Umwelttechnik GmbH originated in 1992 from the Institute Fresenius group, which was founded by Carl Remigius Fresenius in 1848. The Fresenius group employs over 50,000 people in Germany and around the world.
